Why Health Psychology?

It’s been quite a journey. I have also studied EMDR and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. Specializing in Trauma has helped me better understand the root causes of illness, addiction, and stress.

Since 2002 I have been in practice as a Traditional Naturopathic Doctor.  I earned my degree from Trinity School of Natural Health who have been providing professional programs of study in Natural Health since 1991.  My education also included business management and dietetics.  Why did I continue my education in Health Psychology?  I have always  felt especially drawn to true mind-body medicine.  Naturopathy somewhat includes the psychological aspects of health but does not delve to the depths I wanted to go in learning the mental/emotional/behavioral, psychological, aspects in why people become physically ill and do not get better. Chronic illness.  Chronic pain.  Chronic blood sugar issues.  Chronic heart issues.  A chronic illness is something an individual is not overcoming.  They may be managing it somewhat but are not truly healing.

Reiki Healing Sessions

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a method of natural healing based on the application of Universal Life Force Energy also known as Chi or Prana. Reiki is one of the more widely known forms of energy healing and involves direct application of Chi for the purpose of strengthening the clients energy system (aura). Chi is the term used by the Chinese mystics and martial artists for the underlying force the Universe is made of. Mystics in all cultures have talked about the physical universe being made of an underlying form of something, much as modern physics research is now coming to understand the Universe is made of energy which is subject to (or affected by) thought. Just as modern physics says this energy is affected by thought the mystics also say this underlying form is affected by thought, going so far as to claim we create our own reality from our thinking and the thoughts we share between each of us every day.

In hospitals and clinics across America, Reiki is beginning to gain acceptance as a meaningful and cost-effective way to improve patient care. Reiki helps patients relax, improve mental attitude and reduce the anxiety often associated with hospital visits.

Universal life-force energy is naturally circulating throughout a person’s body. A Reiki treatment augments a strong , powerful flow of this energy to sustain health and vitality. This energy relaxes muscles, speeds digestion, stabilizes blood pressure and blood sugar, calms a racing pulse, stimulates the immune system, and relieves pain. Reiki will help those with existing health problems and provides an excellent form of preventive medicine for those who are essentially healthy.

May is Mental Health Month Addressing Mental Health #B4Stage4 Contact: dohi Center for Well-being, 717-473-4080, dohiWellbeing@gmail.com, Waynesboro, PA (May 11, 2015)—Addressing mental health before Stage 4—this year’s theme for May is Mental Health Month—calls attention to the importance addressing mental health symptoms early, identifying potential underlying diseases, and planning an appropriate course of action on a path towards overall health. Mental health conditions should be treated long before they reach the most critical points in the disease process—before Stage 4.

“When we think about cancer, heart disease, or diabetes, we don’t wait years to treat them,” said Charlotte Test, Chief Executive Director of dohi Center for Well-being. “We start before Stage 4—we begin with prevention. So why don’t we do the same for individuals who are dealing with potentially serious mental illness?

“This Mental Health Month, we are encouraging everyone to learn the signs, ask for help if needed, address symptoms early, and plan an appropriate course of action on a path towards overall health.”

One of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition is to take a mental health screening. Mental Health America has online screening tools for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder at mhascreening.org. MHA’s goal is to get every American screened and aware of their mental health, so they can address it #B4Stage4.

MHA has also developed a series of fact sheets available on its website (www.mentalhealthamerica.net/may) on realizing the critical importance of addressing mental health early, recognizing the risk factors and signs of mental illness and how and where to get help when needed.

May is Mental Health Month was started 66 years ago by Mental Health America, to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone.

“When feelings and emotions get overwhelming, it’s hard to know what to do,” Charlotte Test said. “Sometimes, these early symptoms might not ever become serious. Like a cough, they often go away on their own, and are nothing to fear. But sometimes, they are a sign of something more severe and shouldn’t be ignored. Taking a screening is the first step to protect your mental health, and addressing mental illness before Stage 4.”

Research shows that by ignoring symptoms, we lose ten years in which we could intervene in order to change people’s lives for the better. During most of these years most people still have supports that allow them to succeed—home, family, friends, school, and work. Intervening effectively during early stages of mental illness can save lives and change the trajectories of people living with mental illnesses.

“Prevention, early identification and intervention, and integrated services work,” concluded Charlotte Test. “When you address symptoms before Stage 4, people can often recover quickly, and live full and productive lives.”
