Waynesboro, PA, November 11, 2014:  dohi Center for Well-being, LLC, owned and operated by Timothy R. Test, Sr., Ph.D., N.D., MCA, CSC, CCDS, CRC and Charlotte M. Test, N.D., B.A., CLC, RAS, is now accepting new clients for substance use disorders (SUD), co-occurring disorders, and mental health counseling for drug-free treatment in Franklin County.  Located at 1663 East Main Street in Waynesboro, dohi Center for Well-being is a facility that specializes in health and wellness services for children through adults, and Veterans and families.  Our services include:

THE WELLNESS PLAN

The skills and knowledge of our team of specialists are at the cutting edge in holistic therapies with the understanding of the link between the mind, body, and spirit.  Our therapists work to meet the individual on his or her initial level, and then design a personalized plan for a journey toward total life transformation. Our approach to addiction treatment and co-occurring disorders is based on decades of clinical and scientific research and time-tested methodologies while we utilize the caring person-center approach to counseling.  We pride ourselves in the support and services we offer to those who struggle with addiction by providing a structure in which they can be successful in recovering and improving their overall well-being.

THE dohi CURRICULUM

Mindfullness-based cognitive behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and the stages of change model have been developed from evidence-based practices.  These models provide us with an engaging, fresh, and interactive approach to improving well-being.  To offer a truly holistic program of an integration of treatments, we incorporate the best practices we find for addiction and mental health with the vital fundamentals of body, mind and spirit wellness.

ASSESSMENTS

Our team is dedicated to providing the highest quality care while maintaining a comfortable and soothing environment, putting emphasis on the individual rather than the disease label.  We tailor our approach to each client by identifying his or her particular needs from which we create specific individualized plans.

MEETINGS AND PARTICIPATION

Clients are encouraged to attend support group meetings several times a week and weekly community meetings, in addition to the individual therapy sessions and group sessions at dohi Center as the primary focus.  This ensures each client attains the most therapeutic benefits possible.  Each client is empowered to be well.

GROUPS/CLASSES

Several psycho-educational classes are offered, emphasizing the evidenced-based treatment modalities of Mindfulness Meditation, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Stages of Change, Community Therapy Model, and Systems Thinking.

These classes offer clients the opportunity to assess their current situations, clearly define goals and develop necessary coping skills and strategies.  In addition to these classes, clients may participate in life skills classes, wellness groups, guidance in nutrition, anger management, and meditation.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Clients receive at least 1 individual therapy session per week with their primary therapist.

GROUP THERAPY

Facilitated by our staff, clients have the opportunity to explore issues and process their efforts in recovering and improving well-being in a safe, peer-supported atmosphere.

FAMILY THERAPY

One or more family therapy sessions are offered during a client’s treatment. The purpose is to include important people in the treatment process, such as a significant other, child, parent, sibling, friend or employer. This program is educational and therapeutic with respect to helping loved ones understand the process of chemical dependency and how to implement healthy coping strategies — especially when there are feelings of anxiety or fear, or a crisis arises.

Chances for improving well-being and recovery are increased by family participation, and because of this, we ask all clients to encourage family members and/or loved ones to take part. In addition, most of the activities our clients participate in are beneficial to everyone’s health and well-being.  Insights in the working aspects of relationships are discussed, as well as areas where changes may occur.

CONTINUED CARE

Recovering from addictions and improving well-being involves a lifelong way of living; each client’s works with their primary therapist in developing a continuing care plan.  Upon leaving the services at dohi Center for Well-being, clients are empowered with the appropriate contacts and referrals which help in continuing along the road to healing and enjoying better well-being.

Drug-free Therapy for Pain

Our specialty at dohi Center is to help our clients achieve optimum health and well-being, in a drug-free environment.  What does this actually mean for a person?  It can mean anything from just feeling good throughout the day, to healing  and overcoming difficult health challenges.  What it does not mean is maintaining drug use to an accepted perceived comfort level.  Unfortunately many people believe that this is all they will ever be able to do.  This is shocking to us because it is far from truth.  The truth is, your body has amazing innate healing abilities, and we know how to work with these abilities to benefit you, our client.  Innate abilities to heal means your own natural abilities to heal, even from chronic pain.

There are many options of therapy to benefit a person experiencing chronic pain, such as what one would experience in lower back pain from injury, while avoiding prescription opiate analgesics and other pain relieving drugs.  Injuries are usually not permanent and a person has the potential for recovery from them.  However, while dealing with the pain by using medications, the longer a person takes opiate analgesics the more they are put at risk by the dangers of drug tolerancedependence, and addiction.  An effective program to help a person with pain, who wishes to avoid medications, should include behavioral techniques in relaxation, mind-body medicine, and alternative therapies.  This type of program can help the person in recovery from the injury and to be relieved of pain without drugs.  Sounds simple doesn’t it.  Remember, the results of this process are achieved by working with your innate ability to heal!  This is our expertise at dohi Center.

Behavioral techniques that are used to help with back pain include relaxation as well as behavior modifications.  Relaxation techniques have been shown to be beneficial for lower back pain when it is included in a person’s program (Brannon & Feist, 2010).  Relaxation techniques involve progressive muscle relaxation, which the person can learn to do independently.  In addition, operant conditioning to increase physical activity has been shown to effectively lower the need for medication (Brannon & Feist, 2010).  Operant conditioning involves changing the behaviors that contribute to chronic pain and encourage the implementation of behaviors that will help with healing.

Techniques in mind-body medicine can be incorporated into a program for lower back pain.  For example, mindfulness meditation has been shown to help individuals who suffer from lower back pain.  Implementing mindfulness meditation into a person’s program may help with improvement in pain acceptance and also with physical function (Morone, Greco, & Weiner, 2008).  Mindfulness meditation is also used effectively for stress reduction (Brannon & Feist, 2010), depression, PTSD, post-pregnancy depression, substance abuse, and other problems we will discuss here in other articles.  To point out a key point, since stress plays a major role in lower back pain, we often use this technique to help in reducing pain.

The specific drug-free therapies we use at dohi Center include mindfulness meditation, relaxation, and operant conditioning to help our clients reduce pain while reducing the need for medications.  We also incorporate your nutritional needs, which also play an important role in healing and reducing pain.  Other alternative therapies can also be included in the program for lower back pain.  Acupuncture has shown to be one of the most effective complementary treatments for lower back pain (Brannon & Feist, 2010).  Both chiropractic manipulations and massage therapy are also very effective for relieving back pain, which can be incorporated into a drug-free pain program.  In fact, chiropractic manipulations are shown to be a superior treatment for musculoskeletal pain over conventional medical treatments (Brannon & Feist, 2010).

By incorporating mind-body therapies into a pain program along with behavioral modifications and techniques in mind-body medicine, you have the opportunity to be relieved of pain while avoiding the medications used to address pain that can be so detrimental to your overall health, well-being, and life.  You also know that we, at dohi Center, offer many therapies including mindfulness meditation, relaxation, operant conditioning, and behavior modification which reduce pain while reducing the need for medications.  Each of these therapeutic options can be effectively incorporated into your drug-free program for the treatment of your acute or chronic pain.
